The Howling Hills

The Howling Hills were originally the home of the Halflings and contained the best farmlands in the continent. However, in the Year 1023 the dark god Wolfram, commonly known as The Defiler for his perversion of the hills, gathered a horde of monstrous creatures and unscrupulous mercenaries to conquer the hills. The Halflings and the Iron Dwarves, who had been offered a home in the Hills after their exile from the dwarven kingdom of Amorlynn, were able to hold out for three years before they were driven from their homes.

Now the Howling Hills are in Wolfram’s iron grip, his home-base for an eventual expansion into the Trampled Steppes and beyond. The land is scarred after two hundred years of occupation by hobgoblins, bugbears, manticores and other unspeakable creatures. Wolfram’s Horde also serves as a sanctuary for the darkest parts of humanity, allowing guilds of assassins and bandits to operate with impunity, so long as they offer tribute to Wolfram.

Many of the Iron Dwarves and Stoutheart Halflings dedicate themselves to disrupting Wolfram’s efforts at expansion, both out of spite and in the hopes of reclaiming their home someday. The Legion acts as a bulwark to hold Wolfram back, but without the efforts of the raiders they would have been overrun long ago.
