Legends of The Old Kingdom
The Penumbral Rainforest
The Penumbral Rainforest is so dense that neither the sun nor the moon can penetrate to the ground below. Even high above the ground, in the treetop villages of the elves, only faint glimpses of light filter through the leafy canopy. This makes the Rainforest perfect for creatures of the night. Vampires, evil lycanthropes, and other monsters take shelter within the Rainforest, hunting unwary travelers who enter their domain and raiding upon Steppes citizens when food is scarce. Only the elves of the Wild Hunt keep these beasts in check, and without their efforts Santeri would be a much darker place.
The Wild Hunt is made up of the Moon Elves and their brothers in arms, the Shadow Elves. Once one of Santeri’s fiercest foes, the Shadow Elves have freed themselves and become one of our closest allies. However, both Moon and Shadow elves are viewed as a bit… odd by the common folk. When you think of an elf, you’ll most likely think of a woodland dweller living as one with nature, dancing amongst the lilies and painting pictures of mountains as they travel through the forest. The Wild Hunt is a bit different.
Where the Sun Elves of the Burning Sands live as one with nature, the Wild Hunt fights a constant battle against the land. Sun Elves generally dress only in thin, loose robes (or less) while elves of the Wild Hunt scarcely remove their suits of heavy armor outside of their own homes. While the Sun Elves sleep in open tents designed only to block out the heat, the Wild Hunt weaves its homes from the thread of Ironsilk spiders, essentially creating portable keeps to protect the sleepers from the beasts that lie waiting in the dark. A member of the Wild Hunt who lets his guard down, even for a moment, can easily lose his life. Try not to judge them if they’re a bit slow to trust, it may be that the last person who asked that pretty shadow elf out for a dance turned out to be a vampire.
